Lancaster
Lancaster is a Third Class city under the Pennsylvania Municipal Government authorization. Lancaster was America's largest inland city during the colonial period. First settled in 1709 it was originally known as Hickory Town. Lancaster became a major transit point along important highways to the western frontier. The Conestoga wagon and the Pennsylvania Rifle were developed in the Lancaster area.
Lancaster has a long and interesting history. It served as a munitions center during the Revolutionary War. The adopted home of abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens, Lancaster was also an important Underground Railroad center prior to and during the Civil War. Lancaster is the county seat of Lancaster County and is the governmental, economic, social, and geographic center of the county.
