Akron is a country village organized as a Borough. First settled in 1830 the name was originally New Berlin. It was renamed for the Greek "akros" which means high place. It is predominantly a residential community but with a strong main street business district. Akron is located approximately two miles southwest of Ephrata and is in the Ephrata Area School District
