Columbia
Located approximately eleven miles west of Lancaster, Columbia was first settled c1726 and was originally known as Wrights Ferry. Wrights Ferry was named for the original settler John Wright who operated a ferry across the Susquehanna River at the location of present day Columbia. The name was changed to Columbia to help in the promotion to have it named the nations capital.

Originally a ferry location for wagons headed west, to a canal town, to a railroad center, Columbia has been associated with transportation and commerce since her beginning. Columbia was also an important timber and lumber mill center during much of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Today Columbia is enjoying a renaissance as a large part of the downtown area is being restored and renovated with an emphasis on the historical character of the borough.
