Marietta
Located approximately fourteen miles west of Lancaster, first settled in 1713, the land that Marietta sits upon was first purchased in 1719 by indian trader Robert Wilkins. In 1727 Robert Wilkins sold his land to The Rev. James Anderson whose son James subsequently established a river ferry. The settlement was originally known as Anderson\'s Ferry. The name Marietta reportedly was taken from the names of the daughters of James Anderson, Mary and Henrietta.
Marietta was an important transportation center in the nineteenth century serving the Pennsylvania Canal and then the Pennsylvania Railroad. Marietta was also an important iron smelting, timber and lumber mill center during much of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Today Marietta is enjoying a renaissance as many of it\'s historic buildings and mansions are is being restored and renovated.
The Borough of Marietta is within The Donegal School District.
